App data

locationjoystick keeps all your data (routes, favorites, speed profiles, and settings) on your device. There's no account and no cloud — none of it is ever sent to a server. Features that move data between devices (like Group Sync or QR transfer) send it directly, device to device, over your local network.

Location permission

Location access is only used to center the map on where you are and to record routes. Your location is never uploaded or shared with anyone.

Update check

About once a day, when you open the app, it asks GitHub whether a newer release exists so it can show the "update available" badge on the Home screen. Your routes, favorites, settings, and location are not included in that request. There is no setting to turn it off. When you're offline, it does nothing.

Camera permission

Camera access is only used to scan QR codes when transferring data between devices. No photos or video are stored or sent anywhere.

Screen reading for compass tracking

The app includes an optional feature called "Compass tracking" (Settings → Menus → Tap to Walk), turned off by default. When you turn it on, the app takes a screenshot of your screen right before you tap a location, so it can read the on-screen compass direction of the app you're using. This lets a tap turn into the correct location update even when the map on your screen isn't pointing north. The screenshot is read on your device to find the compass direction and is never saved or sent anywhere. This feature isn't a tool for people with disabilities. It stays off unless you turn it on yourself.
